Something stood out at the Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, January 15.

Actress Christina Applegate took the stage with a cane to announce the nominees for best supporting actress in a comedy.

Applegate, who rose to fame portraying Kelly Bundy in the series Married… with Children, was moved by the standing ovation from her peers.

In 2021 she was devastated when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Christina Applegate revealed that there is never a good day living with multiple sclerosis.

To make matters worse, she added that, like so many of us, she took certain things for granted — such as bathing or going down stairs. She can no longer do these things on her own.

The actress and producer said that the disease had caused a significant physical change, including weight gain.

One of the people who has supported her the most is actress Selma Blair, who was diagnosed with the same condition in 2018.

What is multiple sclerosis?

According to the Mayo Clinic, multiple sclerosis affects the brain and spinal cord.

Tragically, this disease can cause disability over time.

It also causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to permanent damage or deterioration of nerve fibers.

This condition made Christina reconsider her career as an actress. With the support of her colleagues, she was able to finish filming the series Dead to Me.

There is no cure

Unfortunately, multiple sclerosis has no cure, although there are treatments that help accelerate recovery from attacks.

MS symptoms can vary from person to person and depend on the location and severity of the nerve fiber damage.

While some may completely lose the ability to walk, others have long periods of remission without experiencing new symptoms.

Some of the most common symptoms include numbness, tingling, electric shock sensations, lack of coordination and blurred vision.

What is the course of this illness?

The Mayo Clinic states that most people have relapsing-remitting MS.

In other words, individuals experience periods with new symptoms or relapses that last for days or weeks and improve partially or completely.

These relapses are followed by quiet periods of disease remission that last for months or even years.

So far, the cause of multiple sclerosis is unknown, and it is unclear why it manifests in some people and not in others.

Christina Applegate said she began to notice symptoms of multiple sclerosis halfway through the filming of the series Dead to Me.

At that time, in 2021, the 52-year-old actress began to experience tremors and pain in her legs.

It is worth noting that MS is not a deadly disease, but it significantly influences quality of life.

Finally, sufferers must be diagnosed by a neurologist and other specialists
