The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority in Fort Smith activated its mass casualty protocol in response to the crash.

In addition, they highlighted the magnitude of the event and the need for coordinated action to address its consequences.

Fort Smith, where the unfortunate accident occurred, is located about 1,300 miles (approximately 2,100 kilometers) northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia.

That area near the border between Alberta and the Northwest Territories, is difficult to access for rescue teams.

The remoteness of the location adds complexity to the rescue operations and investigation.

Although a Northwestern Air Lease representative did not immediately provide comment, it was confirmed that this was a charter flight.

This, in turn, ended up raising questions about the nature of the voyage and who was aboard the aircraft.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada deployed its investigators to the scene of the accident to gather crucial information, according to the AP.

The Air Force, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Rangers are assisting in search and rescue operations.

They also confirmed that they are being led by Trenton Search and Rescue Region public affairs officer David Lavallee.

Another CC-130J Hercules was dispatched from Trenton, Ontario. Additionally, a Twin Otter aircraft departed from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to join the rescue efforts.

One of the highlights of the response was the involvement of the Canadian Rangers, who located the aircraft near the Slave River.

«Canadian Rangers located the aircraft near the Slave River, and (search-and-rescue) … parachuted into the site,» Lavallee reported, according to the AP. To see photos click HERE.
