In the very heart of New York City, Shakira arrived to show that Hispanics rule in the United States by bringing together more than 40,000 people for a surprise concert.

That simple announcement was enough for Hispanics living in the Big Apple to crowd the streets around Times Square.

With a great technological display, the self-proclaimed ‘Loba’ took over the screens of the most famous square in New York City for just 15 minutes.

As the music started, the figure of a wolf made of crystals appeared from one of the screens, alluding to the art of her album released on vinyl.

Then the doors opened and Shakira appeared to perform her hit song ‘Hips Don’t Lie.’

«Where are my people from Mexico… my people from Puerto Rico… from the Dominican Republic… my people from Venezuela… where are my people from Colombia?» Shakira cried to thunderous applause.

One by one the songs from her new album were playing, including ‘Puntería’ (which features Cardi B). «How beautiful it is to be here surrounded by Latin people.»

She went on to ‘Cómo Dónde y Cuándo,’ a song that she said is one of her favorites from the album.

«It is an optimistic song, which remembers that the past is a zero to the left and it is only the future that is remembered, it is called ‘Cómo, Dónde y Cuándo,'» said the Colombian singer.

Since Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran also includes some previously released singles, a medley of ‘Te Felicito’ and ‘TQG’ could not be missing from this surprise concert.

But definitely the most anticipated song of the night was her smash hit with Bizarrap, ‘Shakira: BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53,’ with which she closed the surprise concert.

«Thank you my people, I love you very much,» said the Colombian before saying goodbye to the improvised stage in Times Square.

Four days after its release, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran has gone platinum.

On Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, her first new album in seven years, Shakira transforms her pain into art, from the bachata of ‘Monotonía’ to the electro-pop of ‘Te Felicito’ and the mega viral ‘Shakira: BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53.’

«I’ve been through so much in these past few years that I had to literally pick up the pieces of myself and put them back together» Shakira told The Associated Press in an interview.

«And during that process, I think that music was the glue,» she added in the video call from Miami.

«There’s pop, there’s Afrobeat, there’s reggaeton. There’s some Mexican regionals as well. Rock. But there is a common thread,» explained Shakira about the variety of genres on the album.
