Everyone knows how to be stronger physically;

the real trick is figuring out how to be mentally strong. First and foremost, you have to truly know, and believe in, yourself. Make the words of two of our greatest thinkers your mantra: No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. (Eleanor Roosevelt) and You have no control over other people’s taste, so focus on staying true to your own. (Tim Gunn)

So often our own inner dialogue is the biggest obstacle when learning how to be mentally strong. Block out all of that negative self-talk and don’t think about the things you can’t do. We all have an infinite list of those, so you’re in good company. Instead be prepared and focus on your talents and all of the things that you excel at. Don’t hide your light under a bushel — show the world how amazing you are.

Feeling physically strong is a great first step towards projecting confidence. When you’re in shape you’ve got more energy, you’re more in tune with your body and you exude vitality. Start with these three words: posture, posture, posture. Standing up straight, with your shoulders back and head held high doesn’t just make you look more confident (and thinner, by the way) a 2009 study by Ohio State University found that it actually makes you feel more confident.

Psychology professor and co-author of the study Richard Petty reported, «Most of us were taught that sitting up straight gives a good impression to other people. But it turns out that our posture can also affect how we think about ourselves. If you sit up straight, you end up convincing yourself by the posture you’re in.» It pays to listen to mom! Other body language that helps you embrace how to be stronger include a firm handshake, direct eye contact, a confident smile and no fidgeting.

Nothing projects weakness like letting them see you sweat. Even better, just don’t sweat it at all. Yes, it’s easier said than done but do your best to relax before big presentations or important meetings. You’ll never learn how to be stronger if you sabotage yourself with a fear of failure. It helps to think about what will actually happen if things don’t go as planned. Will it really be that bad? Are they all going to laugh at you? Probably not and you’ll definitely be smarter next time. A relaxed attitude will also help you to accept criticism constructively.

When you pause to spend some time clearing your mind and focusing on the moment it gives you the mental space to expand your perspective and truly grow. Yoga and meditation are both great practices attaining inner peace. If you’re new to yoga, try these five poses for inner strength from DoYouYoga. You’ll be hooked!
