A recent University of Florida study suggests that stress may also cause your body to produce a protein called betatrophin. Li-Jun Yang, M.D., a professor and lead investigator in the UF College of Medicine’s department of pathology, immunology and laboratory medicine explains, “Betatrophin reduces the body’s ability to break down fat, underscoring a link between chronic stress and weight gain.”

EXERCISE STRATEGICALLY

You’ve probably heard of High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. It involves alternating intervals of exercising at full capacity with intervals of low intensity. Experts say that HIIT is a great way to work out more efficiently and for shorter periods of time while building lean muscle and increasing your metabolism for as much as 24 hours afterwards. You should also do a mix of cardio and strength training for maximum fat burning.

De-stressing and getting a good night’s sleep are two key for how to speed up your metabolism. When you’re chronically sleep-deprived or don’t have a regular sleep schedule it can throw your whole body out of whack. Lack of sleep and stress both raise cortisol levels which slows your metabolism and raises blood glucose.
