Daycare worker arrested for stealing clothes from children and pawning them

Virginia Vela-Torres, 45, who worked for a daycare in San Antonio, Texas, took advantage of the innocence of the children she was supposed to care of to steal their valuable belongings and then pawn them. However, the intelligence of a four-year-old girl put an end to her crime spree and now she’s paying dearly.

The San Antonio Police Department arrested Vela-Torres on the west side of San Antonio after a four-year-old girl told her mother that the suspect had removed her charm bracelet and kept it.

Daycare worker arrested

Through the police investigation, detectives discovered that Vela-Torres had pawned another charm bracelet from another child. Now, the suspect faces three counts of robbery and a felony. She is currently jailed.

After an initial investigation, the Southern Property Crimes Unit of the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) learned that the bracelet had been pawned. The parents of two other victims made similar accusations of stolen and pawned bracelets.

Evidence from security cameras

Investigators also said that security camera videos at the pawnshop and nursery show Vela-Torres in a pink T-shirt, which reads: «It takes a big heart to mold little minds.» The parents of the three children, whose ages were three and four, were able to identify the stolen bracelets, according to San Antonio police.

Since then, all the bracelets have been recovered, according to the police. Vela-Torres offered no resistance when she was arrested. As expected, Vela-Torres no longer works in the nursery, whose name has not been published by the authorities.

The nursery is fully cooperating with detectives

According to police, the daycare is cooperating fully with detectives to help them get to the bottom of the matter and compensate the victims. According to an arrest affidavit reviewed by Kens5, the incident happened at Southwest Loop 410 near Lake Valley Street. The address is listed as Valley Hi Baptist Academy and Daycare.

It is suspected that these were not only incidents of robbery involving Vela-Torres. So the San Antonio Police Department is asking those who may have been victims of Vela-Torres to contact the South Property Crimes Unit at 210- 207-7184.
