Prosopagnosia: What is the strange disease that Brad Pitt suffers from?

Anyone would think that the life of a world-famous Hollywood star, as in the case of Brad Pitt, is practically perfect, but the reality is very different. The 58-year-old American actor admitted in a recent interview what nobody would have imagined.

In a conversation with GQ the star of films such as Fight Club, Troy and Se7en, among many others, said that he believes he suffers from prosopagnosia, or face blindness. It’s a rare disorder characterized by the inability to recognize people’s faces.

Brad Pitt is concerned that he is seen as «aloof and self-absorbed»

The Oscar winner of the film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by Quentin Tarantino, revealed in the interview that he has difficulty recognizing people and worries that his disorder has led people to see him as someone «aloof» or «self-absorbed».

“No one believes me!” he declared, recalling that this is also an obstacle in social settings, especially at parties. This isn’t the first time Pitt has insisted he has prosopagnosia: «A lot of people hate me because they think I’m disrespecting them,» he told Esquire in 2013.

In another part of this same interview, the actor, who is also known for his relationships with actresses Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, revealed that on some occasions people have helped him with this problem: «Occasionally, someone gives me context and I say, ‘Thank you for helping me.’”

“But there are people who hate me because they think I’m disrespecting them. There was a year where I just said, this year I’m going to face it and ask people where we met, but it just got worse. People were even more offended and interpreted my problem as a gesture of vanity or egomania.”

The actor gave up alcohol after his breakup with Angelina Jolie

After his much talked about separation from Angelina Jolie, in 2016, Brad Pitt made several changes in his life, which included giving up alcohol and cigarettes. In an interview for GQ magazine, the Meet Joe Black star said that shortly after the breakup he decided to join Alcoholics Anonymous, where he felt his privacy was respected.

“I had a really cool men’s group here that was really private and selective, so it was safe,” he says. “Because I’d seen things of other people who had been recorded while they were spilling their guts, and that’s just atrocious to me,” he recounted. The World War Z star added that more recently, he has also quit smoking, so he now uses nicotine lozenges.

“I don’t have that ability to do just one or two a day. It’s not in my makeup. I’m all in. And I’m going to drive into the ground. I’ve lost my privileges,» Brad Pitt said. During the interview, the 58-year-old actor made few direct references to his breakup with Jolie, with whom he has six children and who was his partner for more than a decade.

Originally from Missouri, Pitt moved to California as a young man. One of his first notable roles on the big screen was as JD in Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise (1991). To date, he has won two Oscars: one in 2014 as producer of 12 Years a Slave (named Best Film) and another in 2020 as Best Supporting Actor, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
