Life seemed to be on an upswing for him, until he committed the gravest error of his life. It ultimately cost him dearly.

The rise of El Pirata

Born Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales, El Pirata was a young man of limited means.

He found himself entangled in the web of drug trafficking in Culiacán, Sinaloa, the same state that gave rise to Chapo Guzmán.

He soon adopted the moniker ‘El Pirata de Culiacán’ and his life took a drastic turn, marked by newfound wealth and unrestrained partying.

At the tender age of 17, El Pirata de Culiacán’s videos amassed a staggering 790,000 followers on Facebook and an additional 323,000 on Instagram.

El Pirata de Culiacán’s videos became known across Mexico for showcasing his heavy drinking, despite being underage.

He was so popular at one point that anyone who encountered him during his escapades could record his antics and upload them to their own accounts, reaping thousands of likes in return.

Juan Luis Lagunas Rosales was living the life he had yearned for, yet he failed to realize that his role as an influencer would eventually lead to his tragic demise.

In December 2017, he shared a video in which he insulted one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and the United States — Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes who is also known as El Mencho.

El Mencho is a drug trafficker is known for being the leader of the dangerous Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).

It seems that El Pirata de Culiacán forgot who he was talking to. «El Mencho **** me ****,» he said in the video.

El Pirata de Culiacán’s video went viral and the influencer’s life was threatened because of what he said.

Around 11:00 p.m. on December 18, 2017, as El Pirata de Culiacán was at a northern music venue, tragedy struck.

Armed assailants stormed in, bullets flying, targeting the young influencer.

The 17-year-old was struck by approximately 15 bullets, according to official reports.

Before his death, El Pirata de Culiacán’s videos had become increasingly controversial, showcasing him doing drugs and flaunting his risky lifestyle.

While some praised his audacity, others found his videos repugnant.

El Pirata’s ‘friends’ often goaded him into consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, taking pleasure in his extreme inebriation.

They celebrated his crazy antics, which included filming himself riding a horse or getting dangerously close to a Bengal tiger.

In mid-2022, one of El Pirata de Culiacán’s videos began circulating, leading many to believe he had miraculously come back from the dead.

However, this notion was debunked as the video was merely old footage from when he was still alive.

One of El Pirata de Culiacán’s videos showcases the young influencer seemingly engaged in a heated exchange with a woman.

In the clip, he approaches her and instructs her to stop talking to someone on the phone.

«Give me the phone,» he insists. His demeanor suggests he may have been under the influence, as he seems unsteady on his feet.
