  • Wendy’s pulls lettuce from its sandwiches amid E. coli outbreak.
  • The decision was made at restaurants located in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
  • The dangerous E. coli continues to spread in three US states.

E. coli outbreak continues to wreak havoc in the US. Fast-food chain Wendy’s said it is removing lettuce from sandwiches at its restaurants in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania after people who ate there reported getting sick.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Friday that they are trying to determine if romaine lettuce is the source of an E. coli outbreak that has sickened at least 37 people and whether the romaine lettuce used at Wendy’s was also served or sold at other businesses, according to the AP.

The CDC said one person also got sick in Indiana. A message was left with Wendy’s about lettuce in sandwiches in that state. The CDC said there is no evidence that romaine lettuce sold in grocery stores is linked to the E. coli outbreak.

The agency also said it’s not advising people to stop eating at Wendy’s or not to eat romaine lettuce. Wendy’s says the lettuce used in its salads is different and is not affected by its decision to remove the lettuce from the sandwiches. The company said it is cooperating with the CDC. “As a company, we are committed to upholding our high standards of food safety and quality,” Wendy’s said in a statement. The number of those infected could increase over time due to the uncertainty behind the origin of the outbreak. People infected with E. coli range in age from 6 to 91 years old, according to reports from health authorities cited by Fox News.

The CDC said it will use its PulseNet system to track the E. coli bacteria outbreak during its investigation. They also stated that the actual number of infected people may be higher and the bacteria may be present in other US states apart from Ohio and Michigan. Filed Under: Wendy’s pull lettuce

«Some of the illnesses reported in Michigan and Ohio have not yet been reported to the PulseNet system, but researchers are working quickly to add them to PulseNet to determine if they may be part of this outbreak,» the CDC said in a statement issued last week.

Fox News reported that if a person thinks they are infected with E. coli, the CDC recommends that they keep track of what they ate in the week before infection, report the illness to their state or local health department, and answer any other questions about the disease that public health officials can do.
