The attackers and the master plan: Flights AA 11 and UA 175

One minute before eight in the morning on September 11, American Airlines Flight 11 departed from Boston, bound for Los Angeles.

Among the passengers were the five attackers. Mohammad Atta was the leader and would take control of the plane.

Meanwhile, at 8:14 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 also took off from the same airport, headed for Los Angeles.

Here, too, five hijackers were on board. The plan was in motion, and nothing would stop them from carrying out their mission at any cost.

AA Flight 11 hits the North Tower

Half an hour after being hijacked, AA Flight 11 entered New York air space. Air traffic controllers had no idea that something was amiss.

Gradually, it began to descend lower and lower until it crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, which had 110 floors.

The plane penetrated floors 93 through 99, instantly killing hundreds of people. But there was more tragedy to come.

It is believed that the impact rendered the stairs from the 92nd floor and above inaccessible, trapping many people.

Impact and devastation on the Twin Towers and several destroyed floors

The plane’s fuel created a massive fireball upon impact, destroying a bank of elevators.

Furthermore, adding to the horror, several lower floors exploded into flames, including the West Street lobby and level B4.

It is said that in some areas, temperatures reached a thousand degrees Celsius.

Thick black smoke enveloped the upper floors of both the North and South Towers but the worst was yet to come.

Second impact: The South Tower

At 9:01 am, UA Flight 175 entered New York air space without any issues, despite not being on its intended route. They never turned off the transponder.

A couple of minutes later, it crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. In this case, the plane passed through floors 77 to 85.

Given the surreal nature of the situation, many initially thought it was an accident, which was ruled out with the second impact.

Many people witnessed this attack on live television. The images were simply shocking.

Twin Towers destroyed floors: It was impossible to escape the flames

According to the BBC, UA Flight 175 banked before impact, unlike what happened with the first plane.

It’s worth noting that one staircase, from the 91st floor downward, was accessible, but descending was far from easy.

Smoke, darkness, fire and the smell of fuel made it even more challenging for those who were still alive to descend.

Unfortunately, very few people were able to do so. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in this attack, a tragic event etched into humanity’s memory.
