‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ were big winners at the 2024 Emmys

• The 2024 Emmys didn’t have many surprises.
• Two series swept the awards.
• Matthew Perry was honored in memoriam.

Succession and The Bear left little room for other winners at the 75th edition of the Emmys, both nabbing six awards, according to the EFE agency.

They won for best drama and comedy series respectively, expanding on their successful trajectory this awards season.

The ceremony was held in Los Angeles on Monday, January 15 — four months later than planned due to last year’s strikes.

This meant many of the winners also recently took home Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.

Succession was a big winner at the 2024 Emmys

The fourth and final season of Succession, the HBO series about the Roy family had already emerged victorious in the 2020 and 2022, according to EFE.

This year Kieran Culkin also won for best actor in a drama.

Sarah Snook took home the award for best actress. Best supporting actor in a drama went to Matthew Macfadyen and it also won for writing and direction.

«So as nice as it would be to work with everybody again, I do think it would be strange to do a spinoff,” Macfadyen said.

The Bear was another big winner

The Bear star Jeremy Allen White emerged as lead actor in a comedy series at the Emmys.

Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach for supporting actor and the show also won for best direction and writing.

«Thank you to all those who stayed close to me, especially this past year. Thank you for believing in me when I had trouble believing in myself,» said White.

White is one of the most stylish men in Hollywood and he is sweeping awards season with his role as chef Carmen Berzatto, according to EFE.

Beef also won awards

In addition, Beef, the Netflix phenomenon about a the aftermath of a road rage incident, was destined to follow in the footsteps of The White Lotus as the best limited series.

Beef also took home awards in four other categories: best direction, best writing for a limited series. Stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won for best actress and best supporting actor in a limited series.

“A lot of the suicidal ideation in this show was based on stuff that I and some of the folks up here have struggled with over the years,” Lee Sung Jin began his acceptance speech.

«So I’m really grateful and humbled by everyone who watched the show and reached out about their own personal struggles,» he added, according to The Associated Press.

Pedro Pascal arrived to the Emmys in a sling

Pedro Pascal presented the best supporting actor in a drama series at the Emmys, and had a humorous message for his rival Kieran Culkin.

Culkin defeated him at the recent Golden Globes and at the Critics Choice Awards.

«A lot of people have been asking about my arm; it’s actually my shoulder. And I think tonight is a perfect time to tell everyone that Kieran Culkin beat the s— out of me,» Pascal joked.

Pascal, who attended the gala with his arm in a sling, was responding to Culkin’s Golden Globes acceptance speech when he beat Pascal for the best actor award and said, «Suck it Pedro,» in his speech.

Jenna Ortega went home empty handed

Jenna Ortega, who has Mexican and Puerto Rican roots, failed to win best actress in a comedy series at the Emmys, for her acclaimed role in Wednesday.

This award went to Quinta Brunson, from Abbott Elementary, who won last year for best comedy writer for the same show.

«I don’t know why I’m so emotional,» Brunson said through tears. «I think it’s because of the whole Carol Burnett thing.»

The audience erupted in laughter as she began listing people in her family, a typical trope of the awkward acceptance speech.

Matthew Perry was honored

Among the most emotional moments was the In Memoriam for Matthew Perry, EFE reported.

This was during the tribute to the personalities who died in the last year, while the Friends anthem, ‘I’ll Be There for You,’ was playing.

Emmys producers had a difficult task: summarizing more than a year of celebrity deaths, dating back to the last Emmys in September 2022, according to The Associated Press.

«We try to include as many people as we possibly could given the time allotted… it was done with love, care and respect,» producer Jesse Collins told The Associated Press.

Elton John is now an EGOT

Additionally, British musician Elton John became the 19th EGOT.

That would be someone who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award.

He had been missing the Emmy and he won this year for best variety show.

It was for his livestreamed farewell tour at Dodger Stadium that aired on Disney+ in November 2022.

Christina Applegate made a surprise appearance at the Emmys

Christina Applegate, who has been battling multiple sclerosis for more than three years, made an appearance received an enthusiastic ovation.

Some surprising cast reunions, including Cheers and Grey’s Anatomy were also applauded, according to EFE.

The 76th edition of the Emmys will be held in September of this year.

Series like Succession have come to an end and other shows like The White Lotus won’t air in time for the next show.
