Thousands of innocent people from more than 80 countries lost their lives in this terrorist attack.

That night, then-President George W. Bush, who was harshly criticized, shared a message to the nation.

«America was targeted for attack because we’re the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining,» said the president.

Classification of the September 11 Attacks

The day after, in a meeting with his national security team, Bush stated that these attacks were more than acts of terrorism.

«The American people need to know that we are facing an enemy unlike any we have ever faced before,» he revealed.

It didn’t take long for the name Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda network to emerge. In December, bin Laden claimed responsibility for the attacks.

«There are thousands of these terrorists in more than 60 countries. They are recruited from their own nations and neighborhoods and taken to camps,» the President said about the September 11 attacks.

Consequences and remembrance

From December 2001 to June 15, 2004, the Victim Compensation Fund processed claims for death and injury from victims’ family members.

It’s worth noting that family members had until December 22, 2003, to apply for compensation, although the fund was reopened in 2011.

On January 2 of that year, President Barack Obama signed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010.

This reopened and expanded the scope of the Victim Compensation Fund, according to CNN.

Cost and cleanup

According to CNN, it is estimated that $123 billion was lost during the first two weeks after the Twin Towers collapsed.

On the other hand, the estimated cost of the damage to the World Trade Center site and its surroundings was calculated at $60 billion.

On September 14, 2001, the U.S. Congress approved a $40 billion emergency anti-terrorism package.
