Just one month before the anticipated opening of the Viña del Mar 2024 International Festival, the acclaimed singer Peso Pluma finds himself at the center of controversy.

His participation in the prestigious event is now at risk, and there’s a possibility that he won’t be appearing at the renowned festival.

This situation has arisen after the organizing committee considered canceling his performance due to alleged links to drug trafficking.

Last year, Peso Pluma dominated the music charts, securing top positions on various music streaming platforms and YouTube.

The 24-year-old singer, Hassan Emilio Kabande, has quickly risen to fame, matching the renown of famous international artists. He was also honored as ‘Man of the Year’ by ‘GQ’ magazine.

However, his rapid ascent to stardom has not been without controversy, particularly regarding the lyrics of his corridos tumbados.

In 2023, this issue attracted the attention of alleged criminal groups, who reportedly targeted him with narcomantas, warning him to cancel his performances.

Hassan Emilio Kabande, hailing from Jalisco, has been announced as part of the lineup for the Viña del Mar International Festival 2024.

However, the shadow of drug trafficking hangs over his participation, with the organizing committee considering the possibility of canceling his concert.

They are reportedly evaluating him as a potential promoter of drug culture.

This news comes at a critical time for Ecuador, which is grappling with a security crisis sparked by organized crime.

Although Chile hasn’t experienced this level of conflict, it too is engaged in its own battle against drug trafficking, as reported by ‘The Associated Press’.

According to ‘Infobae’, the current context has prompted sociologist Alberto Mayol to question the ethics of the festival’s organizing committee.

In his column, Mayol stated: ‘Right under our noses, our authorities, who are determined to put an end to drug trafficking, will face a full audience,’ he wrote.

‘Some, naively believing that whatever is said and fashionable should be praised and accepted,’ he continues.

‘Others, perhaps with suggestive posters that television might censor, will see their favorite star on stage – the singer who embodies their own culture, their reality,’ he adds.

Many have taken to the social media channels of the Viña del Mar International Festival to urge the committee to cancel the performance of the leading figure in war bullfights.

Despite the criticism, several people have highlighted the artistic value of Peso Pluma, recalling his successful performance at the Movistar Arena in Colombia last December.

Record‘ reported that an executive from Chilean National Television has confirmed that the suspension of Peso Pluma’s performance at Viña del Mar is currently under consideration.

The final decision now rests with the organizing committee, who are expected to soon provide a definitive announcement regarding what will transpire at the Latin music festival.

René Lues has publicly appealed to the mayor of Viña del Mar, Macarena Ripamonti Serrano, requesting her to reconsider the singer’s participation in the event.

She argues that ‘The Double P’ represents values completely contrary to those of the town and the festival.

‘The truth is, the content has had a profound impact on me, leading me to reflect deeply on the music and lyrics of the so-called corridos tumbados,’ he stated.

‘The artist blatantly glorifies violence and armed conflicts, organized crime and corruption, as well as drug trafficking and drug cartels,’ he disclosed, as reported by ‘Infobae‘.
