Latin music has a new king, and his name is Peso Pluma, The Mexican artist won the most awards on Thursday at this year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Peso Pluma received eight awards, including four for ‘Ella Baila Sola’, his collaboration with Eslabón Armado. He also won New Artist of the Year.

Bad Bunny left the Wastco Center in Miami with seven Billboard Latin Music Awards, most of them for his hit ‘Titi Me Preguntó’.

Nevertheless, the highlight of the night was Bad Bunny’s performance, marking his return to the Spanish-language award ceremony after a four-year absence.

His medley included ‘Moscow Mule’, ‘Titi Me Preguntó’, ‘La Neverita’, ‘Me Porto Bonito’ and ‘Where She Goes’ before he went on to perform his latest single, ‘Un Preview’.

Peso Pluma’s triumph at the Latin Billboards reflects the surging popularity of new Mexican music styles in both the United States and the Spanish-speaking world.

His corrido tumbado track, ‘Ella Baila Sola’, made history in 2023 by becoming the first song in the regional Mexican genre to claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

Before his performance, Bad Bunny, who won the coveted Billboard 200 Artist of the Year award, took to the stage in his socks and expressed his gratitude.

«I hurried because I was changing, but I wanted to express my thanks for the unwavering support you’ve always given me. I create music because I love it and because I enjoy what I do. Thank you.»

Karol G won big

Among the female artists, singer-songwriter Karol G stood out as the biggest winner, according to EFE.

The Colombian artist was recognized for her album Mañana Sera Bonito.

In addition to her musical achievements, Karol G was also honored with the Latin Billboard Spirit of Hope Award for her philanthropic efforts in support of women and children through her Con Cora Foundation.

«This is probably one of the most special awards I will ever receive in my entire career,» said La Bichota as she presented the award to the director of her foundation.

Surprises and tears

One of the surprise highlights of the awards show was the live performance of the ‘Por las Noches’ remix.

Peso Pluma took the stage alongside the Argentine artist Nicki Nicole, sparking speculation about their rumored relationship.

Another standout moment came from fellow Argentine Tini, who presented a new version of her hit ‘Cupido’. this time incorporating elements from the Dominican dembow genre.

Another big winner of the night was Colombian artist Manuel Turizo, who received three awards for his hit ‘La Bachata’.

Chiquis pays tribute to Jenni Rivera

Chiquis led a heartfelt tribute to her mother, Jenni Rivera, on the tenth anniversary of her passing.

Jenni’s daughter delivered an emotional and unprecedented performance, collaborating with the bands Calibre 50 and Los Sebastianes.

The medley of songs by the iconic Diva de la Banda included ‘Basta Ya’, ‘Inolvidable’ and ‘Ya Lo Sé’.

«I have always been very careful with my mother’s legacy. Now, I felt the time was right to honor her with my voice,» Chiquis shared with EFE before her performance.

Los Ángeles Azules received their first award

Before receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Los Ángeles Azules collaborated with Nicki Nicole, Ximena Sariñana, and Sofía Reyes.

Together, they delivered a memorable performance of Los Ángeles Azules’ iconic cumbias, including ‘Otra Noche’, l Listón de tu Pelo,» «Nunca es Suficiente,» and «Como te Voy a Olvidar.»

«It’s the first time in our nearly 45-year career that we’ve been honored with an award recognizing our entire body of work.»

«We are filled with excitement and gratitude,» Jorge “El Doc” Mejía Avante shared with EFE, representing his brothers and fellow members of Los Ángeles Azules, during the Blue Carpet event that preceded the gala.

Urban music dominated the night

Myke Towers, the artist with the most performances of the night, premiered his hit ‘LaLa’ on television.

Following that, Yandel took the stage to perform his recent collaboration, ‘Borracho y Loco’, and wrapped up his performance with ‘Cielo’, featuring Feid and Sky Rompiendo.

Meanwhile, Justin Quiles and El Alfa joined forces for ‘Fiesta Loca’, while Farruko, La Factoría and Eddy Lover delivered a reggaeton remix of ‘Perdóname’.

Eladio Carrión also graced the stage with a special version of his Latin trap hit, ‘Mbappe’.

Everybody danced with ‘La Bebé’

Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma,  ignited the crowd with their Mexican reggaeton performance of ‘La Bebe (remix)’, getting everyone out of their seats.

During the award ceremony, Yvy Queen received the Icon Award from Yandel and dedicated it to her daughter, Naiovy, while reflecting on her legacy.

«This genre taught me to embrace my masculinity because, when I started, I had to compete with males, not females,» La Cabalota shared.

The winners of the Latin Billboard Latin Music Awards were determined based on fan interactions, music sales, album sales and song sales.
