Crónica: Hispano arma desmadre
  • Man dressed as a woman makes a tremendous ‘desmadre’.
  • Fortunately, the police managed to stop Anthony Rodríguez in time.
  • Apparently he was willing to slaughter a group of people

Before I begin to tell you my story today, I want to explain that in my country El Salvador the word ‘desmadre’ refers to something worse than a mess and, according to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), this is defined as a conduct where you go through life without any kind of respect or measure.

I explain this because I know that in Mexico this phrase is considered by many as rude, but at least today, that’s not the case. I want to tell you about the story of a man, who the police initially thought was a woman, who allegedly tried to run over a group of pedestrians.

He waited for the Let Freedom Ring parade to start

It turns out that every year, in the small town of Rincon, about four hours south of Atlanta and half an hour north of Savannah, near the coast of Georgia, a popular family parade known as Let Freedom Ring is held prior to Independence Day.

More than a thousand people attended this festival annually, but after the pandemic, the number was reduced to several hundred. In fact, last Saturday when it was celebrated, there were around 600 people there, including adults, the elderly and children of different ages and ethnicities. Of course, the area was well protected by local authorities. Filed Under: Chronicle Hispano weapon rampage

It turns out that after the recent incidents of heavily armed ruthless men breaking into crowded places and opening fire on innocent people, the police didn’t want to take any chances and arrived in numbers, which is believed to have saved many lives.

This time, there was no shooting, but someone did show up in a vehicle that intentionally drove through a barricade which was blocking one of the many streets on the parade route and headed at full speed towards where the crowd was watching. Filed Under: Chronicle Hispano weapon rampage

They thought the driver was a woman

Due to the appearance of the driver, who at first glance looked like a woman, the authorities spread the word that a female was driving towards people and possibly attempting to run them over which unleashed a tremendous police chase. They were focused on stopping her before she caused a massacre. And they succeeded.

Fortunately, an officer in a patrol car that bravely headed off the vehicle knowing he could be injured or even killed. Nonetheless, he fulfilled his oath to protect and serve the citizenry even risking his own life. Filed Under: Chronicle Hispano weapon rampage

They arrested him with no resistance

After the brave action of the officer who acted as a shield to stop the car, his colleagues surrounded the man at gunpoint to subdue him. Seeing that he was cornered, the person they believed to be a woman gave up without hesitation. It was then that he was identified as 38-year-old Anthony Rodríguez.

The man was handcuffed and charged with aggravated assault, among other serious charges. He was transported to the Effingham County jail and, although the investigators tried to get information from him about why and what his true intentions were behind his reckless action, he remained silent. For now, they don’t know the motive behind the incident. Filed Under: Chronicle Hispano weapon rampage

No one was hurt

Thank God that this story had a happy ending, because none of the parade attendees were injured or killed. In fact, neither the officer nor his canine companion suffered serious injuries after the collision, so it can be said that that day went very well for everyone involved, with the clear exception of Rodríguez, who is in for the mess of his life.

As for the defendant, regardless of whatever his personal motive was for attacking so many people, nothing is justified. Let him be grateful that he didn’t kill anyone, because that would have guaranteed him never to breathe fresh air again or even capital punishment. Thanks for reading my story today. Until next time.
