- The shocking causes of the WTC collapse.
No one could have imagined what would ultimately happen in the early hours of September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center.
It seemed like a typical day in New York, and a regular work day across the United States.
It’s worth noting that at that time, we didn’t have the ability to share information in real time like we do today thanks to social media.
However, minutes before the first impact, what would be the last photo of the Twin Towers was captured.
The last Photo of the Twin Towers
Josh Elliott Martin shared the last photo of the Twin Towers on his Facebook page.
Taken by David Monderer, the World Trade Center stands out among the other buildings in New York City.
«This the last picture taken of the world trade center (twin towers),» Josh wrote, adding that the picture was taken at 8:30 am.
«16 minutes before the first tower was hit. Such a beautiful day until it was taken from me.» People commented immediately.
«When you realize, everything changed»
Seeing what would be the last photo of the Twin Towers, people reacted in different ways. It’s a day they will never forget.
«I remember watching cartoons with my two cousins that morning, and when you realize, everything changed.»
Another shared that, at that moment, he was at his desk on the 45th floor of the South Tower.
«I’ll never forget how blue the sky was before everything happened,» commented another internet user.
«This is such a chilling photo»
Sylvi Hehlert-Friedrich Chandler shares what would actually be the last photo of the Twin Towers before the attack on Facebook.
She asks people to check the positions of the cars and boats in the water and goes into more detail.
«The middle boat coming from the WTC is just a little further up by the time the Tower gets hit.»
Sylvi accurately called it a «chilling» photo.
Why the Twin Towers collapsed
It’s striking that the Twin Towers, after being in flames for nearly 60 minutes each, collapsed in a matter of seconds.
Studies were conducted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are revealing.
These studies, published in 2002, reveal that the collapse of both towers was primarily due to two factors.
There was severe structural damage caused by the plane crashes into both buildings and a chain of fires across multiple floors.
What engineers concluded about the collapse
Civil engineer Eduardo Kausel, professor emeritus at MIT, reached two important conclusions, according to the BBC.
«If there hadn’t been a fire, the buildings wouldn’t have collapsed. And if there had only been a fire, without structural damage, they wouldn’t have come down either.»
Furthermore, he claimed that the towers had a lot of resilience. Official documents state that they were designed to withstand the impact of a Boeing 707 aircraft.
To conclude, it is said that the towers had a standard design in the 1960s when construction began.
