Judge blocks abortion ban in Louisiana

LOOKING FOR ALTERNATIVES. On Monday, after a tense weekend due to the public response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, some state leaders have been quick to support «trigger laws» while others are looking for ways to protect abortion rights.

This is the case in Louisiana, where abortion providers have sought a way to prevent a ban from going into effect by petitioning a district judge, to block it. Robin Giarrusso, agreed with the Center for Reproductive Rights and issued a temporary stay until July 8.

LOUISIANA LOOKS FOR ALTERNATIVES

A judge on Monday temporarily blocked the abortion ban in Louisiana, which went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, according to the EFE agency. For the moment, the aim is to block Louisiana’s trigger law banning abortion and to find alternatives.

Louisiana is one of nine states that made abortion illegal on Friday through a so-called «trigger law», which automatically went into effect as soon as the Supreme Court’s ruling was announced, EFE highlighted. The temporary block is giving other states ideas about how to counter similar laws.

How to protect abortion rights in the US?

New Orleans District Judge, Robin Giarrusso, agreed with the Center for Reproductive Rights, which challenged the Louisiana trigger law because its content is «vague,» EFE said. Through a press release, the organization spoke about the Court’s ruling and the search for other types of options to prevent the abortion ban from going into effect.

Could there be a change for Louisiana?

According to this group, the law does not clarify what behaviors are prohibited or whether there are exceptions in which a doctor can perform an abortion. The judge called a hearing for July 8 to review the case, according to EFE. In the meantime, the law is temporarily blocked.

Is it a matter of time?

There are three clinics in Louisiana that perform abortions. They are located in the cities of New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport, which stopped their services last Friday. Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin also banned abortion on Friday, while the ban will take effect within a month in states like Texas, EFE said.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, overturned Roe v Wade, which has protected the right to abortion in the US since 1973. The ruling of the high court does not prohibit abortion, but leaves the power to regulate, restrict it or even prohibit it, in the hands of states, said EFE.
