The UN Security Council has achieved a significant milestone by approving, for the first time and after several unsuccessful attempts, a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

This measure comes after months of conflict that has claimed the lives of 32,000 people and left one million people in a state of «extreme food insecurity.»

The resolution, with 14 votes in favor and one abstention from the United States, received applause in the room, a rare occurrence in this type of situation.

It calls for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, which ends on April 9, in the hope that it will lead to a lasting truce.

Additionally, there is a call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas, although this request is not directly linked to the resolution.

One of the highlights of the ceasefire resolution is its emphasis on the urgent need to expand humanitarian assistance and strengthen the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Israel is also urged, without explicitly mentioning it, to lift all barriers preventing the flow of humanitarian aid to the region.

The ten non-permanent members of the Council promoted the initiative, representing different regions of the world, including countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

This reflects the world’s awareness of the seriousness of the war in Gaza, according to EFE.

Al Jazeera reports that the approval process was marked by uncertainty until the last moment.

Russia proposed a change to add the word «permanent» after «ceasefire,» saying that «durable» could allow Israel to continue the war.

However, this change was not approved, and the resolution remained without major changes.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres compared the situation in Gaza to the apocalypse, highlighting the ruin and suffering that the war has caused.

Guterres said there is no justification for punishing the people of Palestine and called on all parties within to seek a peaceful and humanitarian solution.

This resolution marks an important step in international efforts to end the war in Gaza.

Despite the difficulties and obstacles politicians, community international has demonstrated its commitment to the search for peace and the protection of human rights in the region.
