In downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, dozens of people gathered to protest overturning Roe v. Wade. The crowds were holding up traffic in the area, which apparently angered a truck driver who decided run over the protesters.

Around 7:17 p.m., the protesters were crowded near the federal courthouse, when the driver of a pick-up truck accelerated and ran over at least one of the people who were on the street, according to local police.

What happened?

The incident began after the protesters and the driver exchanged some words in a verbal confrontation, according to local outlet KCRG. The chilling moment in which the truck accelerates into the crowd was recorded on multiple videos.

Danger: Crowd full of children

“Tonight, a pickup truck jumped through traffic and ran over peaceful protesters crossing the pedestrian walkway at the Federal Courthouse,” said Cedar Rapids Councilmember Ashley Vanorny, who was part of the protest. «I was walking next to them, the crowd included children next to me,» she detailed in Twitter along with the chilling video. Vanorny added during an interview with The Sun that «everything was peaceful.» She continued, “As we were finishing up, literally the last leg of it, just crossing the street to get back where we had started, a truck decided to be impatient. I think it was completely unrelated to anything that we were there for, and it decided to jump out of line. They weren’t even the first [vehicle] at the stop and plowed into people as they were crossing.”

Will he be facing charges?

According to Vanorny, when the truck passed at full speed, it ran over one person’s foot and knock over at least three of the protesters. However, local police confirmed that only one of the pedestrians was injured. It was not serious but she was still taken to a local hospital.

The police have already identified the driver, but they have not yet filed charges as they are trying to determine if it was intentional. Councilwoman Vanorny added that it was “really disheartening and disgusting” that they will let what happened go. «This type of thing is not allowed in Cedar Rapids and we will make sure that this person is held accountable,» she added.
