Arisley Batista was shot to death by her boyfriend in a crime that has shocked the small community of New London, Connecticut. According to the New London Police Department (NLPD), 20-year-old  Nikeuri Rodríguez shot his girlfriend, set his apartment on fire and then killed himself.

Arisleidy Batista, 18, was an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who had lived in Connecticut for six years. She had just graduated from New London High School. A year ago she began her relationship with Nikeuri Rodríguez, but wanted to leave him because he was jealous and controlling.

Kilsy Castillo, the mother of Arisleidy Batista, shared a message on her Facebook page after learning of her daughter’s brutal murder. “My daughter was a noble girl and that despicable man took her life. Everyone loved her, she was a brilliant girl,» said the grieving mother.

At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. several neighbors called emergency services to report shots fired at a building at the intersection of Granite Street and Williams Street in the seaside town of New London, Connecticut.

When the NLPD patrolmen arrived at the building where the incident was reported, they began to evacuate all the residents and neighbors because the fire threatened to burn several houses. The New London Fire Department (NLFD) also arrived at the scene of the tragedy.

In the midst of the fire, NLFD rescuers found two badly injured people in one of the apartments. One was Arisleidy Batista who was already dead from three gunshot wounds. She had been shot once in the head, once in the arm and once in the torso. Next to her was Nikeuri Rodríguez, who had a gunshot wound to the head.

Nikeuri Rodriguez was pulled from the flames of the burning apartment by NLFD and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He died from a gunshot wound to the head shortly after arriving at the emergency room.

NLPD officers and NLFD firefighters determined that the apartment where they had found Arisleidy Batista and Nikeuri Rodriguez was also the location of the large fire that caused the evacuation of the rest of the neighbors.

Janiyah Williams, Arisleidy Batista’s best friend, told the NLPD that the two girls spent the afternoon of that fateful Wednesday, January 26, 2022 together working out at a local gym. According to Williams her friend Arisleidy told her that she was ready to break up with her boyfriend.

Arisleidy Batista had been living in that third-floor apartment at the intersection of Granite Street and Williams Street with her boyfriend Nikeuri Rodríguez for just four months. However, according to her friends and relatives, the girl was not happy in her relationship.

Janiyah Williams went with Arisleidy Batista to her apartment on January 26. Batista invited her in for a drink after they had worked out together. Once the girls were inside, Nikeuri Rodríguez started grabbing and shoving his girlfriend.

New London newspaper, The Day reported Janiyah Williams’ shocking story. The young woman said that she saw Nikeuri Rodríguez grab Arisleidy Batista’s wrist and threaten her with a knife. He was demanding to know where she had been.

Suddenly Arisleidy Batista plucked up her courage and yelled at her boyfriend, “Stab me, stab me, kill me!” Then her boyfriend, Nikeuri Rodríguez, held the edge of the kitchen knife against her chest. Horrified, Janiyah Williams watched everything without knowing what to do.

Janiyah Williams convinced her friend Arisleidy to go to Walmart with her to buy school supplies since they were both enrolled in college. Batista managed to get away from her boyfriend and the two girls went to the store to escape Nikeuri Rodríguez’s threats.

When Arisleidy Batista was at the Walmart with her friend, she called her mother, Kilsy Castillo, to tell her what had just happened. Williams doesn’t know what Batista told her mom because the two women spoke in Spanish. Then Williams and Batista returned to her apartment.

Janiyah Williams dropped Arisleidy Batista off in front of her building. She asked, «Are you going to be okay?» Batista nodded, they hugged each other, and then Batista went inside. The next thing Williams heard about her friend was that Nikeuri Rodríguez had shot her dead.
