On Wednesday California Governor Gavin Newsom, nominated Judge Patricia Guerrero, who is the daughter of Mexican immigrants, to be the chief justice of California. She is very proud of this achievement.

Patricia became the first Latina judge from California to reach a high court in March of last year, she was also nominated by Newsom at that time. And now history is repeating itself since the Democratic governor nominated her again, this time to be Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court.

According to EFE, if confirmed, the Hispanic judge would replace the current Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who ends her term on January 2, 2023. Guerrero’s nomination must be approved by the Judicial Appointments Commission and the voters in November.

Gavin Newsom sent out a statement saying: “Judge Guerrero has established herself as a widely respected jurist with a formidable intellect and command of the law. And a deep commitment to equal justice and public service.”

For her part, Guerrero, 50, said she was «honored by this nomination.» Born in San Diego, the jurist grew up in the Imperial Valley which is an agricultural area on the California border with Mexico. Her father Jorge Guerrero, born in Mexico, worked as a laborer and her mother was a child care provider.

On the occasion of her nomination to reach the court, the judge said that her grandparents had experienced the «difficulties» that many other families have when arriving in the United States. As a teenager, Patricia Guerrero worked in a grocery store, raising money to pay for her college studies. She attended the University of California at Berkeley, after graduating with honors from high school. She then graduated from Stanford University School of Law.

In March of this year, the Judicial Affairs Commission unanimously approved Patricia Guerrero. Guerrero filled the vacancy left a year ago by associate judge Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar. The granddaughter of a Sonoran migrant, Patricia Guerrero has worked as a prosecutor and a partner in a law firm.

The Court’s panel, made up of Attorney General Rob Bonta and the head of the Supreme Court of Justice, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, stated that Guerrero is «humble before the historical importance of her nomination.» The State Lawyers Commission for the Evaluation of Judicial Nominees determined that Patricia Guerrero is «exceptionally qualified.»
