The heartbreaking story of two 13-year-old boys who fled their native Guatemala to find a better future in the United States, has been revealed. Sadly, tragedy struck when they, and dozens of other immigrants, died inside the trailer in San Antonio, Texas.

The terrifying discovery made by the US authorities on Monday afternoon has caused a stir throughout the country and in Latin America. A 911 call led them to an abandoned truck and when they opened the trailer they found dozens of dead bodies of immigrants and others who were still alive.

In an initial report, the authorities said there were 42 victims, but as the hours progressed, more dead were added to the list. So far, they have confirmed the death of 53 undocumented Mexican, Honduran, Guatemalan and Salvadoran immigrants who were traveling inside the trailer.

Among the fatalities are Pascual Melvin Guachiac Sipac and Juan Wilmer Tulul Tepaz, two 13-year-old cousins, who had made their way from Guatemala to the United States with the idea of ​​achieving a better future. Their story took an unexpected turn.

The youngsters lived in a low-income indigenous community in the western mountains of the Central American country. Poverty and lack of opportunities was what pushed them to undertake the dangerous journey, but with the hope that they could find something better and help their family in Guatemala.

Everything was going well until Monday at noon. “Mom, we are already leaving,” Juan Wilmer said in a last text message he sent to his mother Magdalena Tepaz, before getting into the truck. It was written in Quiché, his native language. They had left home on June 14, The Associated Press noted, and both were headed to Houston, where some relatives were waiting for them.

«Both were happy… they wanted a better future, in Guatemala you don’t earn anything,» said one of the children’s aunts in an interview with Telemundo. Pascual Melvin Guachiac Sipac and Juan Wilmer Tulul Tepaz never reached their final destination. They were found dead, along with dozens of immigrants, inside that truck near San Antonio, Texas.

The Guatemalan government confirmed to their relatives that the two children were among the fatalities. «He told me, Dad, I’m going to go fight… because of poverty he left,“ commented deeply afflicted Manuel de Jesús Tulul, father of Juan Wilmer.

María Sipac, mother of Pascual Melvin, said that the cousins ​​were inseparable. They played, went out and even planned the trip north together. Her son «wanted to study in the United States, then work and then make my house,» revealed the mother of the deceased teenager.

For his part, Wilmer’s father commented that he did not know how the young people would get to Houston, but that he never imagined that they would be put into a truck trailer. Now, the families of Pascual Melvin and Juan Wilmer hope to recover the bodies of their loved ones.
