Duress spent most of his adult life in and out of prison, according to El Mundo.
His first role as an actor was in the 2014 film Heaven Knows What.
He was cast after meeting one of the directors following his release from Rikers Island on drug charges.
After filming wrapped, he was arrested again and sent back to prison. His life was marked by tragedies and bad decisions.
The life and career of Buddy Duress
Upon his release the Safdie brothers asked him to write about his experience in prison, thus inspiring the script for Good Times, which he starred in along with Robert Pattinson.
Despite his appearance in more films, including The Mountain and The Great Darkened Days, in 2019 he was arrested again and charged with grand theft.
Spending so much time in and out of prison affected his acting career.
During the filming of Flinch in 2019 Duress was arrested for threatening to burn down his mother Jo-Anne’s house.
A life marked by challenges and problems
Although his mother and director Cameron Van Hoy paid his bail, Duress was arrested again for threats and illegal possession of weapons, according to El Mundo.
Despite his legal problems, he finished two unreleased projects, including a short film called Skull and the feature film Mass State Lottery.
The latter was directed by Jay Karales and will be released this year, despite the sad news that was announced today.
Karales described Duress as «once in a lifetime charismatic actor and a genuinely humble man.»
Buddy Duress dies
“Buddy Duress was a once in a lifetime charismatic actor and a genuinely humble man that left an impression on everyone he met,” Karales told People magazine.
«I was extremely fortunate to be able to direct him and get to know him off-set during our time shooting Mass State Lottery,» he added.
«What happened is a tragic and frustrating loss of visceral talent,» he told the outlet.
«He lived like a cowboy and carrying the weight of that kind of life informed his skills and performances in a way that made him irreplaceable as an actor,» he noted.
Gone too soon
Karales concluded by telling People: «He has unfortunately become the John Cazale of our generation.»
Buddy Duress’ life and career were marked by personal fights as well as legal ones, but his undeniable talent left an indelible mark on the film industry.
Despite his difficulties, he managed to stand out as an actor, earning the respect and admiration of those who knew him.
