Chronicle: College student is murdered while waiting for his mom to finish doctor appointment

Giovanni Flores was just 19 years old and an exemplary young man. He was very devoted to his family and dedicated to his studies. In fact, he had just started at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). He had his whole life ahead of him and a more than promising future but, unfortunately, all his dreams were cut short.

The young man was shot dead in broad daylight while he was waiting for his mother who was at the doctor. ‘Gio’ as his family and friends called him, was sitting on a public bench in Douglass Park, just a few yards from the hospital where his mother was finishing her appointment.

The young man was with his younger brother. They were both eating some tacos that they had just bought to try to make the wait more enjoyable. What the victim did not know is that death was on his heels. Suddenly, an armed gunman appeared.

They did not see him, because he approached from behind. They realized something was wrong when they heard two loud shots. By then it was too late. One of the bullets hit Gio in the head and the second hit him in the neck. He was killed instantly.

Gio’s life couldn’t be saved

After committing the murder, the unknown coward fled without leaving any trace, other than the bullet casings. He did not attempt to shoot Gio’s little brother. Although the paramedics arrived at the scene a couple of minutes later and transported him to Mt. Sinai Hospital, there was nothing they could do to save him.

The young Latino was declared dead and now his relatives are grieving and trying to, at least, give him a decent burial. They have started a GoFundMe campaign which, thanks to God and the good hearts of the people who knew Gio or who found out about the case, has already collected more than $30,000.

A very unusual and suspicious case

According to the Chicago Police Department, Giovanni’s murderer did not attempt steal anything after attacking him. The victim had his wallet, credit cards and even a cell phone in his possession, so the robbery is not considered to be the main motive for the crime, although they have not yet ruled it out.

The crime occurred on Wednesday of last week at around 1 pm and, so far, the authorities have not yet reported any arrests or revealed the identity of a suspect. Just a few months ago the young man had graduated from Lane Tech high school.

His family demands justice as soon as possible

Gio’s family fears that this murder is going to go unpunished. They are asking for help from the community. They hope that if someone knows something about the guy who took Gio’s life, they will let the police know as soon as possible. They can even do it anonymously at: cpdtip.com

Steven Flores, Gio’s older brother, posted the following on Facebook: “Everyone who knew my little baby brother knew that he couldn’t hurt a fly and that he never did anything to deserve a death like that. He was just beginning to live and doing everything he was supposed to do. He studied and worked very hard at the same time and always treated everyone with respect.” A very sad case.
