According to the details that have been released, a lone individual entered the London Pub — located in the center of the city — took a weapon out of his bag and began shooting. The shooting also spread to a neighboring establishment. Witnesses say that the attack was perpetrated by a suspect who has already been detained by authorities, according to the New York Post.

Initial reports indicate that the suspect has already been apprehended by the authorities after the fatal attack that occurred on Saturday morning. Witnesses confirmed how the attack began. The shooter, whose identity has not yet been revealed, is a 42-year-old Norwegian citizen of Iranian descent. Due to the circumstances, the police are classifying this as an act of terrorism, the New York Post reported.

«I saw a man arrive with a bag, he took a gun out and started shooting,» journalist Olav Roenneberg of public broadcaster NRK told NYP. Although the investigation is ongoing, the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, made a statement describing the attack as a «cruel act against innocent people.» On his Facebook page, Gahr stressed that those affected by the gay bar shooting tragedy are being supported.

“The shooting outside the London Pub in Oslo tonight was a cruel and deeply shocking attack on innocent people. My thoughts are with those affected and their families. We still don’t know what was behind this horrible act, but to the people who are now scared and in pain, I want to say, we are all with you,” said Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister of Norway.

Although police say the shooting is not related to the annual Pride parade, organizers decided to suspend activities and pay their respects to the victims and loved ones. In recent updates, police attorney Christian Hatlo said the suspect was being held on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and terrorism, based on the number of people targeted at multiple locations, The Associated Press reported. The reasons for the attack remain unknown.

“Our general assessment is that there is reason to believe that he wanted to cause great fear in the population. We need to review his medical history, if he has any. It’s not something that we are aware of right now,” Christian Hatlo said. The shooting began around 1 a.m. local time, according to the New York Post.
