- First lady Jill Biden was criticized for her recent speech in Texas.
- Jill Biden compared the uniqueness of Latinos to breakfast tacos.
- She was lambasted for stereotyping the Hispanic community, especially Mexicans.
A group of Hispanic journalists lambasted First Lady Jill Biden after she said that Latinos were as «unique» as «breakfast tacos» during a speech in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, July 11, according to various media including the New York Post and Fox News.
Jill Biden was praising civil rights icon Raúl Yzaguirre during the UnidosUS annual conference when she delivered the awkward compliment to the Hispanic community. Yzaguirre directed the civil rights defense organization, formerly known as the National Council of La Raza, for three decades, the Post reported.
Jill Biden lambasted for insensitive comment about Latinos
“Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community — as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio — is your strength,” Jill Biden said at the event.
However, when referring to the Bronx bodegas, she mispronounced the word for those convenience stores and said «bogedas.» And after her speech, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) criticized the first lady’s comments by declaring bluntly: «We are not tacos.»
“We are not tacos”
“Using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region,” the National Association of Hispanic Journalists wrote in a statement on Thursday on Twitter.
“NAHJ encourages Dr. Biden and her speech writing team to take the time in the future to better understand the complexities of our people and communities. We are not tacos. Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype,” they added.

According to the New York Post report published early Tuesday, San Antonio, Texas, has a population of about 1.5 million people that is 65% Hispanic or Latino, according to official data from the United States Census.
Conservatives also criticized Jill Biden and wondered what liberal outrage would ensue if a Republican made those comments. “No wonder Hispanics are fleeing the Democratic Party!” tweeted Andy Biggs, a House Republican from Arizona, while Marco Rubio, a senator from Florida, also appeared to have taken note of the first lady’s comment by changing his Twitter profile picture to an image of a taco, writing simply : “#NewProfilePic”.
