There is support for victims of sexual abuse
The National Network of Rape, Abuse and Incest (RAINN) is a non-profit organization in the United States that offers a telephone helpline in Spanish for victims. RAINN statistics detail that every nine minutes a person is sexually abused.
“It is not always easy to know what to say when someone tells you that they have been sexually assaulted, especially if it is a friend or family member. For a survivor, revealing it to someone that they care about can be very difficult, so we encourage you to be as understanding and non-judgmental as possible” recommends RAINN in its section in Spanish.
“I believe you, you had a lot of courage to tell me this”
One of the support phrases that RAINN recommends using when speaking with a victim of sexual abuse is “I believe you, you had a lot of courage to tell me this.” The organization explains that “it can be extremely difficult for survivors to come forward and share their story. They may feel ashamed, worried that they will not be believed.”
The person supporting a victim of sexual abuse should not ask why did it happen? as that should be left to the experts and the authorities. “Be careful not to interpret being calm as a sign that the event did not occur; everyone responds differently to traumatic events and the best you can do is believe them.”
There is help for Hispanic victims in the United States
In the RAINN organization they have experts, in Spanish, who can attend to a victim 24 hours a week. “If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, it is not your fault. You’re not alone. Help is available through the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.4673 ”.
In addition to RAINN there are other organizations that can be consulted on the organization’s website, there are other non-profit groups that provide help for victims of sexual abuse and can be consulted at National Resources in Spanish for Sexual Assault Survivors and Their Loved Ones.
