  • Biden considers restricting asylum.
  • It would make it harder for migrants who cross illegally.
  • This would by done through an executive order.

President Biden’s administration is considering implementing stricter measures for asylum seekers.

This could include fast-tracking deportation for those who do not meet the established criteria.

The immigration situation on the southern border has generated political tensions between the Biden administration and Republican-led states.

The White House has considered toughening the initial interview for asylum seekers arriving at the border.

This could also include fast-tracking deportations for those who do not meet the criteria, after Congress failed to pass the bipartisan border bill, NBC News reported Wednesday.

Three government officials told the outlet that the plan seeks to reduce the number of migrants crossing the southwest border of the United States, although this has been shelved for now.

Still, the Biden administration is facing criticism from all sides

The new policy would raise the standards used in the “credible fear” interview that authorities use to establish whether an asylum seeker has a viable case, EFE revealed.

It would also require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prioritize deporting newly arrived migrants.

They will only be considered if they do not meet the requirements to apply for asylum as part of a “last in, first out” policy, officials said.

The Biden administration is only considering these measures after Congress failed to pass a bipartisan border security bill earlier this year.

The Senate bill, which took months to negotiate, did not obtain the 60 votes necessary to go to debate in early February.

The bill also did not have the support of Republicans in the House of Representatives, according to EFE.

The massive flow of migrants across the southern border has once again become one of the main election issues.

It has pitted Republican-led states against the Biden administration.

The political battle, led Republicans in the House, included a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

They are accusing Mayorkas of neglecting the border by not enforcing existing immigration laws, EFE revealed.

The possibility of  raising the standards for “credible fear” reflects an attempt to ensure that asylum seekers have stronger and more legitimate cases.

However, this measure could also make it harder for those who really need asylum.

Immigration is a complex issue

Congress’ inability to address the migration crisis adds an additional layer of complexity to this issue.

The bipartisan bill which failed to advance, shows how difficult it is to find solutions that satisfy both parties.

It’s clear that people on both sides of the issue will be unhappy.

The crisis at the southern border of the United States continues to be a thorny issue that requires a comprehensive and bipartisan approach.
