Lynda Gravatt passed away at the age of 77 this past Friday in a New Brunswick, New Jersey hospital, according to her son David Gravatt.

With a diverse and successful career, Gravatt left an indelible imprint on Broadway, where she was revered for her versatility and acting prowess.

Some of her notable productions include The Old Settler, Crowns, Intimate Apparel, Miss Witherspoon, The Little Foxes, and The House That Will Not Stand.

The talented New Yorker also stood out as a guest star on Sex and the City in a 2002 episode alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, portraying the role of a waitress.

Additionally, she shone in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Judge Tamara Kingston, sharing the screen with the iconic Mariska Hargitay.

In 2008, she was an understudy for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Her versatility and dedication earned her recognition and affection from audiences over decades.

The talented actress also recently appeared in the series East New York, demonstrating that her passion for acting remained intact over time.

Furthermore, she was a regular on The Hoop Life from 1999 to 2000, solidifying her status as a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.

The sad news of her passing was confirmed by the National Black Theatre through a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday.

The theater community joins in mourning to remember a woman who was not only a brilliant actress but also a beacon of inspiration for many.

Lydia Gravatt, who was born in Harlem, portrayed a judge in Jennifer Aniston’s film The Bounty Hunter in 2010.

She portrayed Vernita Wells in Denzel Washington’s film Roman J. Israel, Esq in 2017.

Her friend Viola Davis shared a tribute: «Nooooo!!! Oh no!!! I loved you in every way. Great working with you, laughing with you, sharing your infinite wisdom. Rest well my friend. I love you❤️❤️.»

Her death was confirmed by the National Black Theatre in an Instagram post shared on Saturday, according to the Daily Mail.

«If I’m employed, I’m happy,» she told Backstage in a 2019 interview. «I always wanted to be the ingénue, but I’m usually cast as the pragmatic grandmother, even when I was young.»

«We honor the life and legacy of Lynda Gravatt, a beloved artist and a lasting presence both on and off Broadway,» said one social media user.

«We were fortunate to witness her art firsthand in Miss Witherspoon,» they continued.
