Journalist Natalie Kitroeff was involved in investigative reporting into alleged links between drug trafficking and López Obrador’s 2018 election campaign, according to the EFE agency.

The NY Times called disclosing her contact information a dangerous tactic, especially in a global context where threats against journalists are increasing.

The newspaper reaffirmed its support for the work of its reporters and its commitment to seeking the truth wherever it may be found.

The article written by Alan Feuer and Natalie Kitroeff details U.S. investigations into accusations of ties between López Obrador’s allies and drug traffickers.

López Obrador, in his morning press conference, dismissed the report, calling The New York Times a «filthy rag» and linking it to a supposed right-wing campaign.

He publicly disclosed the cell phone number of the newspaper’s bureau chief for Mexico.

The National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Personal Data Protection (INAI) has announced an investigation into the disclosure of the correspondent’s phone number.

The issue has raised concerns nationally and internationally, being compared to similar actions taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

This latest comparison was made by the renowned journalist Jorge Ramos, who has condemned López Obrador’s actions.

He emphasized the seriousness of jeopardizing the safety and privacy of a journalist and her team simply because he disagreed with their reporting.

«He did something very dangerous today, he read and displayed on a giant screen the phone number of the New York Times correspondent who was asking him several questions,» Ramos stated.

«The same thing Trump did to me in 2015 when I requested an interview and instead of giving it to me, he published my cell phone number, which I later had to change,» he continued.

What do people say on social media?

«This is particularly concerning in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalism after Gaza,» said Ramos.

«It’s not fair to jeopardize the safety and privacy of a correspondent, her family and her team just because you don’t like the questions,» he concluded.

Social media users have expressed different opinions, some supporting Ramos and others criticizing him.

«You invade their privacy, but you get upset when they do the same to you.» «What’s concerning is that there are still people who defend him,» they said.

«Incredible that he exposes a person in that way, being the president, he cannot stop showing his ineptitude.» «Well deserved for being so sensationalist,» others added.

«Worry about the country where you live.» «And you, Jorge Ramos, who have invaded the privacy of whomever you pleased for decades?» others commented.

This incident underscores the importance of press freedom and respect for the work of a journalist at a time when this profession faces challenges worldwide.

The dissemination of a journalist’s phone number not only puts her personal safety at risks but also represents an attack on press freedom. To watch the video where Jorge Ramos condemns AMLO click HERE.
