  • The Doomsday Clock moves closer to midnight.
  • It highlights the need for global actions.
  • It is now at 90 seconds to midnight.

In an announcement provoking tension and concern, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists released the most recent update of the famous Doomsday Clock on YouTube Tuesday.

This symbolic clock, which marks the remaining time before the possible end of humanity, has been adjusted, bringing us even closer to the precipice of the Apocalypse.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, an advocacy group founded in 1947, revealed the main reasons why we are closer to apocalypse.

They cited increasing threats of war, unbridled use of technology and other dangers that have contributed to humanity’s declining lifespan.

“We are really closer to that doomsday,” former Mongolian president Elbegdorj Tsakhia said Tuesday at the annual Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announcement.

He and the former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, pointed out several existential threats, among which the actions and words of Russian leader Vladimir Putin stand out.

«People and scientists are warning us and we have to wake up now,» he said.

Now the Doomsday Clock is just 90 seconds from midnight, signaling the seriousness of the global situation.

Among the reasons behind this disturbing update are armed conflicts, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the persistent proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The announcement was led by Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

Science educator Bill Nye was present at the announcement and shared his views on why we are ticking closer to annihilation.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, since its founding, has used this clock as a symbol of the potential and probability of humanity self-destructing.

On this occasion, the clock has moved 10 seconds closer to midnight than last year, marking a worrying milestone and demonstrating that we are in the most critical situation since its creation.

Despite being 17 minutes past midnight after the end of the Cold War, the countdown has changed from measuring minutes to measuring seconds in recent years.

This highlights the urgency of addressing the threats we face as a society.

The unanimous conclusion of the scientists was clear — wars, the unbridled use of technology and other threats have triggered an imminent descent into the abyss.

The update of the Doomsday Cock is not simply symbolic; it is a wake-up call for humanity.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, known for its focus on issues related to global security, seeks to raise awareness among the public about the importance of addressing these problems urgently and effectively.

«We are sending a message that the situation is becoming more urgent,» Bulletin President Rachel Bronson said in the online announcement.

«Crises are more likely to happen and have broader consequences and longer standing effects,» she added, according to The Associated Press.

To emphasize the effect that the Russian invasion of Ukraine had on approaching the theoretical end of the world, the group said it was also announcing the clock’s update in Russian and Ukrainian for the first time.

Scientists and activists at the Bulletin’s announcement also mentioned the proliferation of nuclear weapons in China.

Iran’s increase in its uranium enrichment, missile tests in North Korea and future animal disease pandemics were also named as factors.

Pathogens from laboratory errors, “disruptive technologies” and the worsening of climate change were other threats to humanity. To see the Doomsday Clock announcement by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists click  HERE.
