Caro Quintero became leader of the Guadalajara Cartel because of his vision for drug trafficking. It is said that «El narco de narcos» produced cannabis without seeds, which increased the level of drug production in his cartel. Although Caro Quintero was not the first to do so, he “mastered” it. In the book Narco-Violence and a Failed State?, by George W. Grayson, Caro Quintero is said to have been a “shrewd young businessman who turned Mexican marijuana from a second-rate weed into the connoisseur’s choice by perfecting a seedless variety of the plant.»

According to SDP News, writer Elaine Shannon claims that other growers in California and Oregon had already created seedless marijuana when the leader of the Guadalajara cartel realized its potential and dramatically increased its production and reach.

Rafael Caro Quintero realized that cheap Mexican labor could be used to grow seedless marijuana on a large scale and he set everything in motion to do so. He and his mentor, Ernesto «Don Neto» Fonseca Carrillo, oversaw the cultivation of thousands of acres of irrigated desert using commercial farming techniques.

This gave the Guadalajara Cartel a growing and early boost, as connoisseurs chose seedless marijuana over others. Rafael Caro Quintero also captured the imagination of the Mexican peasantry, with whom he structured a gigantic production that led him to become the leader of the Cartel, according to SDP News.

Among his crimes, one of the most serious was the plot to kidnap a federal agent. In addition to kidnapping and murdering DEA agent, Kiki Camarena, he faced numerous other charges.

However, the drug trafficker’s file is still in process and will presumably be sent to the United States, like his former compadre El Chapo Guzmán, to stand trial for his crimes.
