The Detroit Tigers released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) to announce the death of Willie Hernández.

«The Tigers are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Willie Hernández … a key member of our team,» they tweeted.

They honored his contribution to  the World Series Championship team.

They also highlighted that during his six seasons with Detroit, Hernández was elected to three American League All-Star teams.

Former teammate and Hall of Famer Alan Trammell expressed his surprise and paid homage to Hernandez as a champion.

«Willie Hernández was a great teammate, and I’m terribly sorry to hear the news of his passing,» the Hall of Famer remarked.

«I will never forget our team’s celebration together on the mound after he recorded the final out of the 1984 World Series,» he recalled, according to ESPN.

«He will always be remembered as a World Series champion. My thoughts and prayers are with this family,» Trammell added.
