GOODBYE TO SUNSCREEN?

Through a press release, the Edgewell Personal Care Company reported that one of its sunscreens would be withdrawn from the market after internal testing found traces of a certain chemical that can cause cancer. For this reason, the company is recalling Banana Boat Hair & Scalp sunscreen spray.

“Edgewell Personal Care Company (NYSE: EPC) today issued a voluntary nationwide recall of three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 to the consumer level as outlined in the table below.” The statement includes a list of the products affected by the recall.

Why was the sunscreen pulled from shelves?

According to the company’s statement, the product was recalled after internal testing determined that some samples contained traces of benzene. That chemical is a carcinogen. Benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat product.

“An internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene. While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,» Edgewell Personal Care Company said.

Is all Banana Boat Hair & Scalp spray being recalled?

In the press release, Edgewell pointed out that consumers who have Hair & Scalp sunscreen spray that is not from the lots on the list may continue to use those products. The company emphasizes that if the product was not from the batches listed on the recall there is no risk.

“Importantly, no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended,” reported Edgewell Personal Care Company.

What is the risk of benzene?

The company also explained that they found traces of benzene in the affected batches. This product is classified as a human carcinogen. If a person inhales it or puts it on their skin, it could cause cancer of two types: leukemia or blood cancer of the bone marrow.

“Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it potentially can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening.
