The United States government has released news that could impact thousands of Venezuelan immigrants in the country.
According to the EFE agency, migrant deportation flights to Venezuela will resume after years of suspending this practice.
Additionally, this option has emerged as a measure to deter migration to its southern border, officials announced this Thursday, as noted by EFE.
With this new decision, it is expected that immigration practices will be regulated between these two nations in an attempt to curb irregular practices.
The US resumed deportation to Venezuela
The Venezuelan Executive has agreed to accept its citizens being deported from the United States, causing widespread surprise in both nations.
This has not been possible until now, as Washington and Caracas severed diplomatic relations in 2019, as indicated by the EFE agency.
Moreover, it is known that the South American country is subject to strong economic sanctions by the United States, according to EFE.
For several years, the political, economic, and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela has led to a mass exodus of its citizens seeking refuge.
What did Venezuela declare?
The United States has become one of the preferred destinations for many of these migrants, thereby exerting increasing pressure on immigration authorities.
The resumption of deportation flights to Venezuela is framed as a forceful response by the US government to this situation.
The US government did not provide details about how it managed to persuade Venezuela to accept deportation flights once again, according to the EFE agency.
Officials merely noted that they have been asking Nicolás Maduro’s Administration «for a long time» to «accept its citizens,» as reported by EFE.
A precautionary measure?
In turn, the State Department indicated that the decision followed a «high-level discussion» on Wednesday in Mexico City.
This meeting, between the governments of the US, Mexico, Colombia, and Panama, focused on how to «address irregular migration» in the region, EFE reported.
The announcement arrives amid an increase in arrests of individuals attempting to cross the US-Mexico border irregularly, as noted by EFE.
Currently, records show that more than 180,000 migrants were detained in August alone, according to EFE. Several cases remain pending for deportation.
A problem that continues to grow?
One of the nationalities most frequently recorded at the time of deportations are Venezuelans, who come to the United States seeking better opportunities.
Until now, authorities could not deport Venezuelans who did not meet the requirements to remain legally in the United States back to their country.
However, as part of an agreement with Mexico, the US has been able to return a certain number of Venezuelans per month to the other side of the border, highlighted EFE.
The US has already identified «several individuals» in its custody who will be sent back to Venezuela on the first deportation flight «in the coming days,» they added.
