It wasn’t until Wednesday afternoon that his body was finally found washed up on the shore, partially devoured by marine life.
The discovery occurred around 5:00 p.m., when tourists noticed human remains floating and immediately alerted 911.
Members of the National Guard and Tourist Police quickly secured the area to prevent bathers from approaching.
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office sent forensic investigators to recover the body, which was then transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).
An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death and examine the conditions in which the body was found.
Although much of the body showed severe bite marks, possibly from sharks, Alejandro Cortés’ face remained almost intact, according to testimonies and photos circulated on social media.

The heartbreaking images caused widespread sorrow, with many praising Alejandro Cortés’ bravery for risking his life to save another.
Friends, acquaintances, and tourists expressed their admiration for Alejandro’s heroic act, acknowledging that not everyone would have been willing to make such a sacrifice.
“He’s a hero. He gave his life for someone else, and that will never be forgotten,” wrote a social media user after the news spread.
Local authorities have not officially confirmed that sharks were responsible, but evidence points to the presence of these animals in the area.
Marine life experts note that while rare, shark attacks can occur when there are unusual currents or if a body remains in the water for a prolonged period.
Chac Mool Beach is one of the most popular beaches among foreign tourists, known for its beauty but also for strong waves during certain seasons.
After the discovery, the area was briefly closed to prevent further incidents and to allow investigators to work.
The U.S. Consulate in Cancun has been notified and is in contact with the young man’s family to provide assistance.

Despite the tragic ending, Alejandro Cortés’ memory will be remembered as that of a courageous young man who selflessly acted for the welfare of another.
His actions have been widely recognized as an act of love, bravery, and humanity, touching the hearts of thousands in both Mexico and the United States, as noted by El Heraldo de México.
