The parents of Thomas Matthew Crooks contacted authorities on Saturday.
This was hours before he opened fire on former President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, according to Fox News.
The mother and father informed local police that Crooks was missing and they were concerned for his well-being, said the source.
It is unclear if they knew he was in possession of an AR-15 rifle that belonged to his father.

The police have not disclosed the actions they took after being contacted.
Crooks’ parents are cooperating with FBI investigators as the agency tries to determine a motive for the shooting.
Authorities have completed the review of Crooks’ phone and social media accounts, but the results have not yet been made public.
Matthew and Mary Crooks, the shooter’s parents, are licensed professional counselors in Pennsylvania, according to state records.
Both obtained their social work licenses in 2002 and renewed them as recently as last year.
Crooks, a 2022 graduate of Bethel Park High School, was shot by Secret Service snipers after opening fire at the rally.

Thomas Matthew Crooks was a registered Republican but donated to a progressive campaign in 2021.
Along with his father, a registered Libertarian, Crooks was a member of a local gun club.
His mother was a registered Democrat.
Crooks earned an associate degree in engineering science from Allegheny County Community College just two months before the shooting.
ABC News reported that he planned to attend Robert Morris University in the fall.
He had also been accepted to the University of Pittsburgh but chose not to attend.
