The history of the Zetas Cartel is not very long but the legacy they left behind has made them one of the most violent and bloodthirsty criminal groups in history. They have caused irreparable damage to the lives of thousands of Mexicans.

According to Infobae this cartel, created at the end of the 1990s, was made up of soldiers who deserted from the Mexican Army and the Federal Police. Officially, a fugitive military lieutenant named Arturo Guzmán Decena was responsible for recruiting elite soldiers in 1997.

The Zetas Cartel adopted a method to terrorize civilians. The greater the savagery, the greater the fear of the people, the obedience of the government and the silence of the media. Their ruthlessness served them well.

They were the first to use methods such as decapitation and the dismemberment of corpses. They also introduced the «stew» which consisted of dissolving the corpses in acid or melting them in oil barrels. Then there are their endless methods of torture.

Between August 22 and 23, 2010, a group of Los Zetas from the community of San Fernando, Tamaulipas, stopped a truck carrying 72 Latin American immigrants who were passing through the area to reach the United States.
These 72 immigrants in search of the American dream lived their worst nightmare on Mexican soil.

Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel were at war for control of Tamaulipas. Amid rumors that the Gulf Cartel was recruiting immigrants to fight them, Los Zetas intercepted these 72 immigrants, locked them up on a farm and offered them the opportunity to join their gang. Days later, the Mexican authorities found the bodies of those same 72 migrants on August 30. They were from countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Brazil.

Mónica Esparza experienced one of the most notorious cases of sexual torture committed by the Zetas. According to the BBC , Esparza recounted the atrocities that she, her brother, and her husband experienced at the hands of the enforcers of Torreón, Coahuila. Those who were behind all this were the Zetas.

They were tortured for more than 14 hours. Monica also suffered sexual torture at the hands of several men who took turns participating; they wore military and police uniforms. Her husband, unfortunately, did not survive all the blows and the humiliation of seeing his wife being assaulted. They forced her and her brother to sign documents that claimed they were from the Zetas Cartel.

A group of at least 60 gunmen from the Los Zetas Cartel demolished the main gate of the Los Garza ranch with a truck. These people were part of the organization and, according to the leaders of the criminal network, they were considered traitors.

Brothers Miguel Ángel Treviño (Z40) and Omar Treviño Morales (Z42), the leaders of the gang, suspected that three members of the organization had betrayed them. The Zetas family took control of the city where their suspects lived. On one weekend, when they took over the city, they destroyed 32 houses, killed numerous people and burned the bodies using gasoline. During the massacre none of the 20 metropolitan policemen who were on duty showed up.

«They are done for!» This was announced at the beginning of the massacre that took place at the Casino Royale, located in Nuevo León. At that point, 18 Zetas men began pouring gasoline into the game room and randomly shooting people. Within minutes, flames engulfed the entire building.

According to Infobae the fire raged through the casino for least three hours. Once firefighters took control of the situation, rescuers found dozens of bodies in the main area and toilets. Some people still had cell phones in their hands and were trying to call for help. The reason, according to the authorities, was that the casino owners refused to pay «protection fee» requested by the Zetas.
