Republican proponents argue that Bill 237 would help police identify and crackdown on protesters who use masks to conceal their identities.

They believe that this practice has increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill, known as House Bill 237, faced strong opposition from Democratic lawmakers.

Community activists and advocates for people with health issues are also against the bill.

These groups have voiced deep concerns about the potential negative consequences of the measure.

Opponents argue that banning the use of masks could endanger public health and limit individual rights.

If the bill becomes law, it would prohibit anyone, not just protesters, from wearing masks in public, including for medical reasons.

The final vote — with 30 votes in favor and 15 against — broke along party lines.

The measure will now move to the North Carolina House of Representatives for further consideration, as it continues to generate debate and controversy across the state.

According to WRAL News, Democratic legislators proposed various amendments to the anti-mask bill to protect people who wish to wear masks for health reasons.

However, Republicans rejected each of these proposals without explaining their opposition.
