Despite having a career spanning two decades, Zac Efron continues to be remembered for his breakout role in High School Musical.

Originally from San Luis Obispo, California, Zachary David Alexander recently celebrated his 36th birthday.

His latest movie, The Iron Claw, will be released in the coming weeks. He shares the screen with Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson, among others.

Recently, rumors about his sexual orientation, particularly speculation that he’s gay, have resurfaced.

High School Musical and Zac Efron’s rise to fame

At just 19 years old, Zac Efron rose to fame in the the hit movie High School Musical.

Before that, he had small roles in several television shows, never imagining what destiny had in store for him.

In High School Musical, he played high school student Troy Bolton, who is the captain of the basketball team. This was also Vanessa Hudgeons’ breakout movie.

It is still considered one of his most successful roles and it made him a teen idol.

People magazine name him one of the 100 most beautiful people

Just a year after the release of High School Musical, Zac Efron was named one of the 100 most beautiful people by People magazine.

On that occasion, he said that he was always the shortest kid in his school and was bullied for his teeth.

After appearing in three High School Musical movies, he went on to star in 17 Again, alongside the late Matthew Perry.

A couple of years ago, he ended his 10-year relationship with Australian model Vanessa Valladares.

Is Zac Efron gay?

Since his appearance in High School Musical, there have been rumors that Zac Efron is gay, something he addressed several years later.

First, the actor stated that he doesn’t like living in fear of such rumors and sees no reason to hide it if it were true.

«I started doing local theater so young — I was 12 — so to me, being gay was just another way that you can be,» he told the Advocate.

In the same interview Efron revealed that he has always had many gay role models.

He’s grateful to the LGBTQ community

Efron also revealed that since doing High School Musical and Hairspray, he has many fans among the gay community.

«It’s very flattering. After High School Musical and Hairspray, I’ve always felt embraced by the gay community, and I feel incredibly grateful and honored,» he said.

At that time, the movie The Paperboy was about to be released, he co-stars with Matthew McConaughey who plays a gay character in the film.

«[T]here’s no doubt in my mind that one of those characters will be gay at some point in the future,» he said, when asked if he would play a gay character in a film.
