A massive fire broke out this Saturday at an amusement park in the state of Gujarat, western India.

Currently, there are 27 reported fatalities, including several children, according to police and news media reports.

The fire erupted in the park located in the city of Rajkot. Police Commissioner Raju Bhargava stated that the fire was under control and that rescue operations were ongoing.

Following the fire, police reported that they had detained the owner and manager of the amusement park for questioning.

Simultaneously, an investigation was initiated, according to The Associated Press.

«So far we have confirmed the death of 27 persons in the fire incident,,» said police officer Vinayak Patel.

He added that at least four children under 12 are among the deceased.

It is said that the amusement park is usually crowded with families and children enjoying the summer school holidays over the weekend.

A video shows firefighters removing debris around structures with tin roofs.

According to media reports, these structures were used for bowling, go-karting, and housing attractions with trampolines.

The amusement park was privately owned by Yuvraj Singh Solanki. Bhargava announced that the police would file a negligence case against him.

We will be registering an offense for negligence and the deaths which have occurred. Further investigation will take place once we complete the rescue operation,» Patel stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X that he was «extremely distressed by the fire… in Rajkot,» according to the AP.

«My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. Prayers for the injured,” he added.
