Puerto Rican urban artist Youngchimi was detained by federal authorities in Puerto Rico.
He is accused of possessing modified firearms capable of firing automatically.
If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each charge.
Ángel Javier Avilés Monzón, the artist’s real name, was arrested on Sunday by FBI agents.
Details of Youngchimi’s Arrest and Federal Charges
The arrest took place at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan.
The federal prosecutor’s office confirmed the information through an official statement.
Court documents indicate that Youngchimi possessed these modified weapons between June 2023 and August 2024.
One of the firearms could shoot automatically with a single trigger pull.
Youngchimi released his debut album, WLGS, in December 2023.
The album reflects street experiences and the «malianteo» style characteristic of his music.
“Lots of ‘titereo’, ‘malianteo’, that’s the main concept,” Youngchimi said in an interview.
He explained that he blends American influences with the reality of Puerto Rican street life.
His lyrics are inspired by his experiences in public housing projects like Luis Lloréns Torres and Las Casas.
Youngchimi grew up in these Puerto Rico neighborhoods and claims his environment shaped his life and music career.
