Is it bad to skip breakfast? According to science, yes! According to the most recent statistics, one in five adults skips breakfast, which is equivalent to 20% of the American population. The remaining 80% claim to eat a balanced breakfast every day.

The reasons why a person skips breakfast can vary. For some, it’s a way to save time, while others report not feeling hungry for the first few hours of the day. However, it is important to remember that a balanced breakfast could positively impact your health and even help you avoid some diseases. But why is it a bad idea to skip breakfast? Here we tell you four reasons!

4. It makes you feel tired

The lack of a proper eating routine leads, in some cases, to people going for long periods without eating food. Skipping breakfast may seem like a good idea at first, but in the long run it could negatively affect your physical, mental and emotional performance.

By skipping breakfast, you will increase the risk of feeling tired during the day, as your body will not be receiving the nutrients it requires to function properly. This causes symptoms such as: increased sleepiness during the day, feeling unwell and lack of concentration.

3. Skipping breakfast causes mood swings

Skipping breakfast can cause abrupt mood swings. This is because your body isn’t getting the carbohydrates that your brain requires to regulate serotonin levels. Without carbs, you can experience mood swings that include anxiety, sadness and anger for no apparent reason.

Don’t let mood swings ruin your day! A balanced breakfast will allow you to reach your daily goals without distractions such as hunger, sleepiness or the feeling that your body is not working at its maximum potential.

2. You may wind up eating more during the day

Skipping breakfast is always a bad idea. If you forget to eat breakfast from time to time, you may not feel major effects, but if this becomes a habit, you will fall into other harmful practices for your body, such as overeating due to excess hunger.

When the body does not obtain the necessary nutrients, it will look for a way to satisfy hunger to obtain energy, and many times this will lead you to consume sugary snacks or foods an excess of saturated fats and carbohydrates that do little to contribute to your health.

1. Skipping breakfast is bad for cardiovascular health

In the long term, skipping breakfast is bad for cardiovascular health. A study published in the American Medical Association journal concluded that 27% of participants showed a higher prevalence of coronary heart disease when they skipped breakfast.

Another risk associated with this practice is hypertension, a silent disease that kills more than 7 million people a year and can be avoided, in most cases, with a balanced diet that includes all food groups at all meals.
