U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan regime has agreed to receive deported Venezuelan nationals as part of his administration’s immigration policy, as well as take responsibility for their transportation back.

In a message posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated that Venezuela has agreed to accept all its nationals in irregular status in the U.S., including, according to him, members of the Tren de Aragua gang.

«It is very good to have the Venezuelan hostages back home and, very importantly, to point out that Venezuela has agreed to take back all illegal foreign nationals from Venezuela who were camping in the U.S., including members of the Tren de Aragua gang,» Trump wrote.

He also highlighted that Caracas had agreed to handle the deportees’ transportation.

Trump’s announcement comes a day after six U.S. citizens detained in Venezuela were released and transported back to the U.S. on a flight accompanied by special envoy Ric Grenell.

During his visit to Caracas, Grenell met with Nicolás Maduro, a meeting that has sparked speculation about a potential reactivation of diplomatic talks between both governments.

However, the Trump administration has emphasized that the meeting’s sole purpose was to ensure Venezuela’s acceptance of deportation flights and negotiate the release of the detained Americans, as reported by EFE.

Maduro, for his part, stated that the meeting laid the groundwork for a future diplomatic relationship, which has been severed since 2019 when Washington ceased to recognize his government.

Tougher Immigration Policies

This agreement with Venezuela is part of Trump’s strategy to accelerate the expulsion of undocumented migrants.

In his statement, the U.S. president asserted that «all countries have agreed to take back their illegal foreign nationals» and that his administration is carrying out «record deportations of criminals.»

Trump’s stricter immigration policies have fueled intense debate, particularly amid the uncertainty of thousands of Venezuelans who have entered the U.S. in recent years seeking refuge from the political and economic crisis in their country.

Despite the announcement, no details have been provided regarding the number of deportation flights to be scheduled or how many Venezuelan migrants will be affected in the short term.
