A passenger bus plunged from a bridge on the outskirts of the Guatemalan capital.
The accident occurred early Monday morning, leaving at least 40 dead and 15 injured, according to Telemundo.
Among the fatalities are minors, as confirmed by firefighters.
Carlos Hernández, spokesperson for the fire department, confirmed the number of casualties and injuries.

Edwin Villagrán, spokesperson for the Municipal Firefighters, explained that a multiple-vehicle crash occurred prior to the accident.
The bus fell from approximately 35 meters and was partially submerged in wastewater, according to Telemundo.
Óscar Sánchez, of the Volunteer Firefighters, indicated that the vehicle was coming from the department of El Progreso.
The National Institute of Forensic Sciences will analyze the bodies of the driver and his assistant.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and declared national mourning.
He ordered the deployment of the military and rescue teams to the affected area.

«Your pain is my pain,» wrote Arévalo on the social media platform X.
Guatemala City Mayor Ricardo Quiñónez expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.
He announced measures to facilitate rescue operations and improve mobility in the area.
He urged businesses to allow remote work to reduce traffic congestion.
