Smothers died after a brave battle with cancer, according to a spokesperson for the National Comedy Center.
The talented artist passed away at his home in Santa Rosa, California, surrounded by his loving family.
This information was confirmed by his younger brother and lifelong companion, Dick Smothers.
«Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner,» said Dick, 84.
Goodbye to a comedy icon

«I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years,» he said.
«Our relationship was like a good marriage — the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another.»
«We were truly blessed,» he concluded his statement about his brother’s death.
The New York Post reported that they have attempted to contact Tom’s family for statements, however, so far there have been no responses.
Tom Smothers and legendary career

The famous brothers were known for both their musical ability and their comedic wit.
They rose to fame by pioneering satirical political comedy with their influential show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on CBS, according to the New York Post.
Journey Gunderson, executive director of the National Comedy Center, paid tribute to Tom, highlighting not only his talent, but also his dedication to freedom of expression.
Gunderson stated that Tom was a true pioneer who transformed television and culture through his show, which satirized politics.
Colleagues and friends say goodbye

«We were proud to bring Tom and Dick out of retirement and reunite them onstage in 2019 to celebrate their legendary careers,» Gunderson said.
«[A]nd we are honored to preserve Tom’s remarkable work and legacy here at the National Comedy Center for generations to come,» she added.
A private memorial service for family and friends is expected to be held sometime in 2024, according to the New York Post.
The Associated Press reported that Dick and his wife, Marie, have requested donations in Tom’s memory to the National Comedy Center.

Tom leaves behind his children, Bo and Riley Rose Smothers, his grandson Phoenix, Marcy Carriker Smothers, his sister-in-law Marie Smothers, several nephews and one niece.
Unfortunately, he was predeceased by his son Tom and his sister Sherry Smothers.
