- Thanksgiving 2024 Becomes More Expensive Due to Egg Shortage
- A Surprise for Many Americans
- Here Are the Details
This Thursday, Americans will celebrate one of the most important days of the year, Thanksgiving 2024, but with an added expense to their traditional dinners.
The price of eggs, a crucial ingredient in many recipes, has risen sharply and shortages on supermarket shelves are contributing to higher holiday costs.
In October, the price of a dozen large eggs hit $3.37, marking a 30.4% increase compared to the same month last year.
This spike is primarily due to a decline in the number of laying hens over the past two years, coupled with avian flu outbreaks that have impacted production.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the inventory of table-egg-laying hens on October 1 was 312.2 million, 2.6% less than the same period in 2023.
Additionally, avian flu has led to the loss of 2.8 million hens across states like Utah, Washington, and Oregon, as reported by EFE.
As a result, the projected egg production for the fourth quarter of 2024 has been revised downward by 5 million dozen.
Facing this egg shortage challenge right before Thanksgiving, Congressman Rubén Gallego, Arizona’s senator-elect, urged USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack to take swift action to curb the spread of avian flu.
Arizona Farms Also at Risk Before Thanksgiving 2024
In a letter sent last Friday, Gallego highlighted that farms in Arizona have also suffered from the outbreak.
This could further increase the egg shortage during the Thanksgiving holiday season, impacting residents of his state.
Gallego proposed measures such as importing eggs from neighboring countries like Canada.
As well as vaccinating livestock and poultry to stop the virus’s spread.
Avian Flu Affects Other Industries
The avian flu outbreak is also impacting other industries, including dairy.
On Sunday, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in a raw milk sample.
This prompted the state’s largest dairy producer to voluntarily recall all products with upcoming expiration dates.
This combination of factors is creating additional economic uncertainty for American households, which are not only facing higher prices for eggs but also other essential holiday foods, making this Thanksgiving the most expensive in years.
