The state of Texas has scheduled the execution of Ramiro González for tonight.

He was sentenced to death for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of 18-year-old Bridget Townsend in 2001.

The execution will proceed after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously rejected a clemency recommendation this week.

This clemency request was made by González’s defense to change the sentence to life imprisonment, reported the EFE agency.

Just hours before the final process for González begins, authorities recapped the information on this case.

The Hispanic man’s defense has argued that his traumatic childhood and the rehabilitation he has shown during all these years in prison make him deserving of a commutation of the death penalty.

In their request, the lawyers also noted that the jury convicted him in 2006 when he had barely turned 18.

Without considering González’s past, who confessed to the murder of the young woman, who was the girlfriend of his drug dealer.

Will he be spared from the death penalty?

They have also cited the changed testimony of psychiatrist Edward Gripon, who at the trial said that Ramiro González had raped the young woman seeking sexual satisfaction.

And that he was a poor candidate for rehabilitation, according to court documents. Gripon changed his opinion about the Hispanic man fifteen years later.

«In my opinion, with reasonable psychiatric probability, he does not pose a future danger to society,» he wrote in his report.

It is the only time he has changed a diagnosis, according to documents from The Marshall Project.

Do they want to save his life?

Since his imprisonment, prison officials have testified to the favorable change in the inmate’s behavior and his willingness to do good after his youthful crimes.

A spiritual advisor said that González expressed the desire to donate a kidney to a sick member of his congregation, but his blood type was not compatible with that of the potential recipient.

Ramiro González’s only chance to be saved from execution lies with the United States Supreme Court, which could order a stay while an appeal of the sentence is evaluated.

In 2022, his lawyers had already managed to stop the execution because the case gained relevance, among other things, to allow him to donate his kidney to someone in need, a wish he has not yet been able to fulfill.
