Snow crabs stolen in Pennsylvania
Philadelphia was the scene of an alarming cargo theft involving a Freightliner truck and a valuable cargo of frozen snow crabs.
The incident took place in the area of Byberry Road in Northeast Philadelphia, marking the second cargo theft in just 10 days, according to ABC6.
Police reports indicate that a group of thieves, estimated to be up to a dozen individuals who arrived in four vehicles, boarded the truck at the Walmart delivery dock.
The events unfolded around 5:30 am on Friday, April 19, at the Philadelphia Mills shopping center.
Thieves make off with thousands of dollars worth of frozen crabs
The criminals’ objective was clear — to take possession of frozen snow crabs valued at approximately $30,000 that were inside the truck’s refrigerated trailer.
Captain Jack Ryan, from the Philadelphia Police Northeast Detectives provided additional details about the incident.
He stated, «It was Grandpa Harvey’s snow crabs. Two pallets — approximately100 boxes valued at $30,000.»
During the process, two of the criminals assaulted the truck driver as he tried to stop them and protect the cargo.
Truck drivers are given recommendations
ABC 6 reports that the driver was treated at the scene, however, the incident underscores the dangers and violence associated with these types of crimes.
It also highlights a broader concern about the safety of truck drivers and the growing trend of cargo thefts in the region.
John Rigney, the director of safety at the Pennsylvania Trucking Association, expressed his concern and offered advice for truck drivers in similar situations.
«They look at the type of trailer. If you see a refrigerated trailer you know there’s something valuable in there. Whether it’s ice cream, pork, crab legs or beef,» he stated.
Investigation into the snow crabs stolen in Pennsylvania
According to ABC 6, Rigney also emphasized the importance of not confronting the thieves and instead contacting the authorities immediately.
This theft is only the latest in a recent string of cargo thefts in Philadelphia — including a case in the same parking lot last year.
In that case $750,000 in dimes was stolen from an unoccupied parked truck, as well as the theft of bourbon and meat from another truck in March.
Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage in the area to gather clues about the perpetrators.
