Fatal shooting in DeKalb: A tragic shooting early Tuesday morning claimed the life of a 17-year-old teen and left an 18-year-old young man seriously injured in DeKalb County, Georgia.

The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. at a gas station located in the 6000 block of Hillandale Drive, where officers responded to an emergency call reporting a person shot.

Upon arrival, authorities found both victims with gunshot wounds and immediately requested medical assistance to transport them to a local hospital.

Unfortunately, the teen could not survive the injuries sustained during the shooting and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical center.

Shooting in DeKalb leaves one dead

According to Fox5 Atlanta, the other victim, aged 18, remains hospitalized, and his current condition has not been publicly disclosed.

Investigators reported that the shooting began after an argument that quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire inside the gas station’s convenience store.

A surveillance camera inside the store captured the dramatic moment when three individuals engaged in a shootout inside the establishment.

The footage, shared by an employee, has been turned over to authorities as part of the ongoing investigation.

Community reacts after DeKalb shooting

«I just thought it was really crazy, the gun violence that’s happening now,» said Quajanay White, a regular customer at the gas station.

Another customer, Ray Nelson, also expressed concern: «I feel like if they increased patrols, there would be fewer shootings and things like that.»

White added that, for her personal safety, she tries to avoid these places late at night: «I try to avoid gas stations late at night. It’s sad that I even have to think like that.»

This tragedy is not an isolated incident at this location, which has previously been the site of gun violence.

Ongoing investigation after armed violence

In 2020, another shooting at the same Shell station left two people injured, fueling local concerns about the safety of the area.

Ray Nelson believes the environment itself contributes to risky situations: «We have a lot of young people who don’t go to school. So, they use the stores as hangout spots.»

Nelson also suggested that better management of the premises could help prevent future incidents: «I think if store employees could keep the entry area clear of loitering, it would be safer.»

Authorities are still searching for a third person believed to have been involved in the shooting and seen on surveillance footage.
